Site Description:
This web site comprises high resolution scanned images of illuminated or illustrated books and music scores mainly from the nineteen century, early twenty century. Most are from our private collections; some are kind offerings from other private collectors.
Browser Requirements:
A browser that supports frames and java script is required in order to deliver good quality images. There is no support for non-graphical browsers. A monitor resolution of at least 1024 x 768 is recommended.
Book Viewing:
From a book’s introductory page, one can access the thumbnail views by clicking on the “View the Book” link or on the book’s image.
Browse through thumbnails by using the “Previous” and “Next” links found on each book’s thumbnail viewing pages.
Clicking on a thumbnail image will load a larger but small-sized image.
A further click on this small-sized image will switch you to an even larger full-size view. A click on this full-sized image will return you to the smaller view.
Under each thumbnail is an alternative the list of sizes available with links to the corresponding image.
To block massive automated downloads that overload bandwidth usage, visitors may be asked to type some code (available in the page) when accessing book pages.

All images on this site are protected by copyright law, which restricts their use. In general, these images are made available for personal use and “fair use”. If you have additional questions, please visit our copyright information page.
File Size & Resolution:
Our intention is to provide high quality images with no heavy compression artifacts. Most images are available at the original size of the page (or spread) and at 150dpi for each full-sized JPEG/JPG image. File sizes with resolutions of 150dpi can be quite large and time-consuming to download for those visiting with low speed modem connections. In the event that a book is presented at a resolution higher than 150 dpi, the size will be posted in the page of the specific book.
Image quality:
Images presented in this library are exact facsimiles of originals, without enhancements or software manipulations, employing a professional, large-format, properly calibrated Epson scanner.
Image sizes:
Scrolling will be needed because larger-sized, JPG, book page images will seem larger than your browser window. This is because browsers support only about 72 dpi and accommodate higher resolutions with an appearance of increased physical size. However, these larger, quality images permit closer study and finer appreciation of beautiful book illustration art. Once downloaded, images print at their true dimensions and at 300dpi.
